Do you usually shop online? If so, then this information is for you

As part of the European Cybersecurity month, the Banco de Portugal will be sharing some tips with bank customers during the month of October on how to safely access banking products and services from their computer, tablet or mobile phone.

This week we draw your attention to six precautions you should take when buying online.

Compras online

1. Make sure the website is secure.

Check that the address starts with ‘https’ and that there is a closed padlock in the navigation bar or at the bottom of the window.

Click on the padlock to check whether the connection is secure.

2. Find out about the seller.

Search the internet for the name of the online store and read about the experiences of other customers in forums.

Be suspicious if you do not find an address or phone number you can ring and the terms and conditions of the sale.

3. Read the terms and conditions of the sale.

Check the payment methods and postage costs.

Check the conditions and costs applying to returns or exchanges.

4. Make sure you only provide the information needed to complete the purchase.

Be suspicious of any requests for data that seem excessive or unusual.

5. Choose a secure payment method.

Choose to pay through:

  • Multibanco reference by making your payment at an ATM or through home banking;
  • Payment instruments with added security, requiring, for example, strong customer authentication. In this case, in addition to your card’s details, you may be asked to insert a code sent to your mobile phone, your fingerprint or other procedures used by your bank;
  • Virtual cards, using apps such as MB WAY.

6. Keep the records and regularly check your bank account.

Contact your bank if you detect unrecognised movements.
